Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is a drug derived from a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. It temporarily blocks various targeted nerves and paralyzes specific muscles in the treatment area. In safe and small doses, the team at West Hills Urgent Care might recommend Botox to treat any of the following medical issues:

  • Facial Botox
  • Chronic migraines
  • Neck and shoulder spasms
  • Underarm sweating
  • Fingers and hands

In most cases, however, Botox is used in cosmetic procedures. For instance, injecting Botox in a specific area of your face softens lines and wrinkles up to four months. It’s the only FDA-approved treatment to fix lines on your face and requires little to no recovery time.

What happens during a Botox procedure?

The specifics of your Botox procedure depend on the reason for your treatment. The team at West Hills Urgent Care reviews the details of your treatment during your consultation, so you know what to expect.

A West Hills Urgent Care team member first cleans and preps your skin. Your doctor then uses ice or a topical agent to numb the treatment area, and carefully injects the Botox.

For most treatments, Botox injections take less than an hour, and usually no longer than 15 minutes. You may feel a slight pinch during the injection, but most patients find the mild, fleeting discomfort tolerable.

Once your practitioner has injected the Botox in the treatment area, they place a cold compress directly on the treatment site to prevent swelling and minimize bruising. Afterward, they recommend you refrain from vigorous activity to reduce the risk of bruising and suggest you not massage or rub the treatment area to prevent the Botox from migrating to other muscle tissue.

No matter the reason for your Botox procedure, the effects are temporary. The team at West Hills Urgent Care provides specific instructions on when you should return to the office to repeat the process.
